Job Summary/Basic Function:
Provide in-depth, specialized, and/or comprehensive advising to faculty and students regarding class choices, curriculum options, majors, departmental and University policies and procedures, and other academic needs.

Department Overview:
The Advising and Outreach Office in the College of Engineering at Boise State University is seeking an Academic Advisor to provide proactive, comprehensive academic advising and retention services to engineering students focusing on first-year academic success. Additional duties include building positive and professional student relationships to help identify attainable educational goals and degree plans through clear communication of academic policies and procedures. The Academic Advisor will assist students in laying the foundations for further success at Boise State. Successful candidates will work collaboratively with university partners to ensure students have access to all campus support services.

Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:
60 % of Time the Academic Advisor will:

  • Maintain positive connections with faculty and staff in focus area to facilitate student connections.
  • Coordinate communication of information related to important dates, deadlines and procedures to advisees.
  • Monitors student progress and suggests and implements corrective actions with students encounter academic difficulties. Meets with students with academic probation suspension or academic misconduct issues.
  • Keeps current on university and college policies and procedures, and rules and regulations to assist students in meeting academic requirements.
  • Acts as a source of information for prospective students, and actively recruits students through participation in various university and college sponsored orientations and events.

35% of Time the Academic Advisor will:
STEM Diversity & Inclusion Collaboration:

  • Maintain a solid connection to the events and programs for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • May consider being the lead on an event/program.
  • Foster an ongoing connection with students in communities that are not well represented.
  • Work with lead staff to provide outreach services to student organizations such as SWE, NSBE, SHPE, and COEN Ambassadors.

University-Wide Advising Initiatives:

  • Participates in creating new-student orientations (Bronco Venture; Transfer and Non-Traditional) and presents academic information to students and parents during orientation programming.
  • Coordinate communications to students regarding registration, academic difficulties, required advising, reinstatement, SAP appeals. Assists students in the submission of materials for academic and financial appeals processes.
  • Participate in university committees and other activities that support the unit's mission and the University.
  • Support retention efforts through activities such as calling engineering students that have not enrolled in classes for the following semester.
  • Participate in college outreach, including campus tours to prospective students and recruiting calls to female and under-represented students.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • The ability to effectively communicate information and ideas
  • Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize and accomplish the tasks at hand
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of institutional policies
  • Good knowledge of: discussing career and educational goals with students; identifying student strengths and weaknesses.
  • Experience: in student counseling, development, education or related field.

Minimum* Qualifications: *
Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from accredited four-year college/university in Student Affairs
  • Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, or other related fields.
  • One year of academic advising experience in a higher-education setting.
  • Experience teaching in a higher-education setting.
  • Expertise in learning development, learning-skills assessment, and academic coaching.
  • Spanish language speaking proficiency.

Starting salary is $42,910.40.
