JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing Campus Safety operations of the Alaska Pacific University (APU) campus, including the supervision of Campus Safety Officers and Campus Safety Assistants. This position is part of the Campus Life team, and works collaboratively with other Student Affairs members to ensure a positive living-learning environment for all students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The Assistant Director of Campus Life is partially responsible for assisting in Campus Life operations and procedures such as being part of the 24/7 Campus Life on-call phone rotation, assisting in the supervision of the Resident Assistants, and other duties related to the APU housing system. Position includes working with individual students regarding developmental issues and is required to advise, counsel and make referrals to students who are adjusting to college life at APU. The Assistant Director is a member of the Student Affairs team and collaborates with a variety of staff and students to provide quality activities for students. The primary role of all Campus Life employees is supporting and fulfilling the mission of APU.

Supervision & Leadership:
Directly supervises and supports the activities of night shift professional Campus Safety Officers and Campus Safety Assistants (student workers), including making suggestions and recommendations as to the hiring, firing, advancement, or other changes of status with these employees.
Communicates with staff on a regular basis through weekly staff meetings, weekly one-on-one meetings, and daily informal contact.
Collaborates closely with Director of Campus Life to develop and implement annual residential student staff selection, training, and ongoing in-service training.
Collaborate with external contract services, including security service providers such as Nana Management Services.
Facilitates personal and professional development of staff members such that they are effective role models, mentors and leaders for their residents.
Advises, trains, and supports student staff and student leaders in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of campus programming on developmental topics to promote a “seamless learning environment” throughout the campus community.
Oversees the educational safety programming efforts for campus.
Serves as a first point of contact for all students of the APU community, and makes referrals for counseling, mediation and conduct issues.
Collaborates with the Dean of Students Office to assist with off campus conduct meetings.
Serves as a role model, resource person and referral agent to campus students.
Develops positive relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
Participates in major events held by the University such as: New Student Orientation, Fall Block Party, Campus Visit Weekends, Spring Carnival, Opening and Closing Weekends, and others as assigned.

Administration:
Organizes and manages the day-to-day administrative aspects of Campus Safety program.
Tests and maintains the Campus Safety reporting system, including emergency phones, APUSafe and the Campus Safety website. Works closely with members of IT to accomplish these tasks.
Maintains records associated with Campus Safety Operations, including Campus Safety incident reports, Campus Safety duty logs, Campus Safety fire log, parking violations, and parking permit databases.
Monitors daily safety logs, incident reports, camera data, and security door systems.
Prepares monthly and annual reports related specifically to Campus Safety as directed by Director of Campus Life or Dean of Students, including preparation of the annual Clery Crime report for the campus.
Responsible to maintaining the regular upkeep of the Campus Safety equipment, including the Campus Safety vehicle, jackets, flashlights, hats, and other related items. Replaces or repairs items as needed.
Proposes policies and implements programs for campus residents to address issues such as earthquake safety, fire prevention, sexual assault prevention, and other related issues.
Actively participates in development of departmental budgets. Ensures accurate and effective financial record keeping for the Campus Safety budget.
Develops and maintains productive working relationships with other campus departments, including Student Activities, Maintenance and Facilities, Custodial Services, Food Services, Recreation & Outdoor Programs, Counseling & Wellness Center, Admissions, Conference Services, Information Technology, Advising, and Accounting & Finance.
Engages in assessment efforts to research student needs, interests, perceptions, and satisfaction based on industry best practices for higher education.
Serves on university committees as assigned.
Assists in the creation of departmental publications such as the Campus Life Handbook and Student Handbook.

Critical Incidence Response:
Shares responsibility with other Campus Life Office staff members for scheduled evening, weekend, and holiday On-Call coverage in an emergency first-responder capacity, on a weekly basis, one to two times monthly.
During On-Call coverage, demonstrates reasonable availability and accessibility to residents, including evenings & weekends.
Recognizes and responds to emergency situations, policy violations, and safety issues in a timely and responsible manner.
Seeks out continued training from FEMA, APD, and external organizations.
Certified in CPR, AED, and CPI.
Provide regular monthly safety trainings to students, staff, and faculty.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

Skill in both verbal and written communication appropriate to a collegiate setting.
Skill in utilizing computers in word processing, spreadsheets, internet and e-mail.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-Supervisory: Two (2) years relevant paraprofessional or community-living leadership experience required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel or a related field is preferred.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Two (2) years professional experience in Student Affairs preferred.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

First Aid training, CPR, Emergency Response Training preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires on-call responsibilities and some evening and weekend work hours. Must have ability to obtain an Alaska driver’s license and drive a manual transmission vehicle.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit, reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance, or kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. Occasional driving on university business is required.

This is a 12-month live-in position, with varying hours and some weekend assignments. This position includes a furnished apartment in Campus Housing and available use of campus meal plan during the academic year.
APU’s main campus is heavily wooded and is often inhabited by wildlife such as moose and black bears. This position may be required to assist in departmental duties that protect humans and wildlife from unsafe interactions.
