The Idaho State Tax Commission is recruiting for multiple Tax Auditor 1 positions (Underfill for Tax Auditor 2*) in the Audit Division within the three bureaus: Income Tax Bureau, Sales/ Fuels Tax Bureau, and Tax Discovery Bureau in Boise. Tax types in examples of duties section below.

Tax Auditors interact with taxpayers and their representatives to verify the accuracy of tax returns and prepare reports of findings, conclusions, or recommendations. The Audit team is our first line of defense in protecting Idaho citizens from very sophisticated fraudsters trying to extract money from taxpayers. What You Need for Success:
Ability to develop knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules and regulations as they apply to various taxes

Ability to be resourceful and research tax issues encountered in an audit

Ability to interpret and apply tax laws to individual and business situations

Broad knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping

Ability to discuss tax issues using various resources to support your decision

Ability to apply and understand ethics and confidentiality laws

Effectively and professionally communicate both orally and in writing

  • Upon successful completion of the requirements for a Tax Auditor 2, the incumbent will complete the underfill and be reclassified to a Tax Auditor 2. The current minimum rate is $24.02/hour.
This announcement may also be used to fill future Tax Auditor 1 openings.

Example of Duties

Communicate orally and in writing with taxpayers and their representatives to verify the accuracy of tax returns through review of accounting systems, financial statements, work papers, tax and payroll records and other related documents.

Research and analyze data for accuracy to ensure compliance with State tax laws and regulations.

Prepare audit findings and summaries.

Identify legal issues and apply appropriate statute, rules and legal precedents.

Tax types may include:
Amusement Devices, Auditorium Districts, Beer Tax, Business Income Tax, Cigarette Tax, E911 Prepaid Wireless Fee, Electricity (Kilowatt Hour) Tax, Estates and Taxes, Fuels Taxes and Fees, Individual Income Tax, Mine License Tax, Oil and Gas Production Tax, Property Tax, Sales / Use Tax, Tobacco Tax, Travel & Convention Tax, Vending Machines, Wine Tax, and Withholding Tax

Participate in team audits

Minimum Qualifications

Good knowledge of accounting principles and practices

Our background check includes a background questionnaire, FBI nation-wide, fingerprint based criminal history check, verification of tax compliance, and receipt of positive references.
