The UWM Department of Communication is a dynamic community of scholars who share a commitment to excellence and innovation in communication research and teaching. We offer programs leading to bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees within three main areas: Interpersonal Communication, Rhetoric and Public Communication, and Organizational Communication.
Job Summary
The Administrative Assistant III serves as the first point of contact for the Department of Communication and ensures that day-to-day operations run smoothly for everyone who comes into contact with the program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: communicating with students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members; facilitating faculty and staff recruitments and processing paperwork for appointments; preparing, tracking and reporting of program budgets and expenditures; managing payroll processes for classified and student employees; serving as purchasing agent for the program; and preparing semester class schedules. This position reports to the Department of Communication Chair.
Minimum Qualifications
1. At least one year experience with business and/or budget record keeping.
2. One year or more administrative office management experience in a professional setting.
3. At least one year experience with and/or evidence of word processing and spreadsheet software knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Evidence of strong written communication skills.
2. Demonstrates experience working with and resolving complaints.
3. Ability to coordinate workload of department office, establish office procedures and train office staff.
4. Work experience in UW-Milwaukee or UW-System or other higher education setting.
5. Demonstrates strong organizational skills, independent judgement and initiative.
