The Minnehaha County Juvenile Detention Center invites applications for a Juvenile Correctional Officer II to perform professional work in the supervision, care, guidance, and custody of juveniles detained by the courts.

The hiring range is $25.38-$28.01 per hour with full earning potential up to $36.74 per hour.

RETENTION BONUS: Newly hired Juvenile Correctional Officers are eligible to receive $1,000 at 9 months, 18 months, 27 months, and 36 months of service with good performance!!

Examples of Duties Include

Supervise and train staff. Complete performance evaluations. Assign shift duties and ensures successful completion. Communicate pertinent information to staff.
Participate in staff development meetings. Assist in the development of Center programs.
Plan, organize, and direct recreation and non-classroom activities. Ensure safety of juveniles by conducting room checks and ensuring safe completion of daily activities such as kitchen assignments and educational and leisure activities.
Act as Special Lay Magistrate. Gather testimony from law enforcement. Determine placement of the juvenile. Schedule court date and time. Notify guardian of determination.
Supervise and observe juvenile's activities including educational instruction, meal periods, personal hygiene, laundry, visitations, and phone calls. Give personal guidance and employ methods to reduce tension and anxiety in juveniles. Enforce facility and disciplinary rules.
Complete proper documentation for warrants, medication administration, incident reports, daily activity logs, admissions, releases, reports, and on observations of juveniles in visitations with family, social interactions, and overall behavior.
Administer medication, take blood pressure and temperature, and assess the medical status and history of juveniles. Assess medical emergency situations and communicate with medical personnel to ensure proper medical care of juveniles.
Admit and release juveniles by completing paperwork and ensuring accuracy of information and checking juveniles' property and medication in and out of the computer system.
Assist in food preparation, kitchen duties, and cleaning of classrooms, showers, and laundry areas. Assist in facility operation and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in social science or related field and two years of experience at or comparable to Juvenile Correctional Officer I. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. Must possess certification in Medication Aide, CPR, Safe Crisis Management (SCM), and first aid (or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire). Possession of a valid driver's license and must maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Working knowledge of the growth, development, needs and problems of adolescents. Ability to work with juveniles, gaining their confidence and respect. Ability to sense, evaluate and manage tense group situations as they develop. Ability to understand and follow written directions. Ability to make quick decisions and judgment calls. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with youth, employees, other agencies and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.
