Role:
Tesla, Inc.’s (Tesla) Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Department is hiring for four (4) Hazardous Waste Operations Supervisor roles. As part of the Environmental Affairs Team, the Hazardous Waste Operations Supervisor will report directly to the Associate Manager, Environmental Operations. The Supervisor will have responsibility for the performance of Hazardous Waste Technicians tasked with the collection, handling, and management of hazardous waste from Tesla’s Bay Area Locations. The 4 roles are location-based and are as follows: 1. Fremont Factory – Fremont, CA, 2. Lathrop/Livermore – Lathrop, CA, 3. Page-Kato Campus – Fremont, CA, and 4. R&D and Battery Recycling – Fremont, CA.

The candidate will be responsible for ensuring daily hazardous waste operations comply with Tesla Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and federal, state, and local hazardous waste regulations. The Hazardous Waste Operations Supervisor will also be empowered to identify continuous improvement opportunities to reduce business risk as it relates to waste handling and disposal costs.

Responsibilities:
Supervise duties of hazardous waste operations staff;
Train hazardous waste technicians on proper OSHA safety guidelines, State and Federal Regulations pertaining to Hazardous Waste Disposal, and Department of Transportation regulations for proper loading, marking, handling, and transporting of hazardous material containers;
Conduct risk assessments on hazardous materials and coordinate storage and handling of hazardous waste;
Track hazardous and non-hazardous waste generation, storage and disposal for Tesla as required by local, state, and federal law;
Create and maintain all records associated with hazardous waste generation including manifests, land disposal restriction (LDR) notifications, monthly accumulation logs, and inspection reports;
Prepare hazardous waste inventory for annual Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP) and Material Inventory Report, including updating Site Maps with waste container locations;
Ensure weekly and monthly environmental compliance inspections are conducted on all central and satellite accumulation areas and all records properly organized and maintained;
Implement, monitor, and ensure compliance with Tesla SOPs;
Prepare purchase requests, schedule outgoing waste shipments, and review and process vendor invoices;
Create profiles of waste streams with vendors to find the most efficient and cost-effective option for all generated waste;
Manage hazardous waste profiles, manifests, and disposal records and perform data entry tasks to upload to internal software tracking tools;
Develop and implement waste minimization plans;
Partner with Environmental Coordinator on projects to promote proper record keeping procedures and to streamline consistency across Bay Area facilities;
Collaborate with Environmental Coordinator to ensure all team training is completed successfully and within the required timelines;
Track and report out waste metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to Environmental Managers;
Provide training and coaching to team members, including written performance reviews and feedback as part of Tesla’s Performance Acceleration Process;
Plan for and implement new waste management areas or collection points based on new projects or changes to existing processes or production lines;
Prepare quarterly budget forecasting for routine and non-routine projects or tasks;
Manage daily pass down activities and ensure proper transition between work shifts;
Ensure all central and satellite accumulation areas are kept clean and always organized;
Schedule and perform industrial cleaning tasks for routine and non-routine projects, including preparing necessary PPE for the team, and reviewing potential hazards with EHS prior to performing the work;
Coordinate hazardous material spill response activities as part of the Emergency Response Team and ensure incident report is properly prepared and documented.

Requirements:

  • High school graduate required; college degree is a plus;
  • 5+ years of experience in Environmental related field in high tech industry or similar environment;
40-hour HAZWOPER training;
Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Certification is a plus, but not required;
Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure;
Ability to interface with customers;
Experience with people management is a plus; and,
Proficient in Microsoft Suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc.).
