SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Responsible for inspection, testing and maintenance of wheels sets, brakes, brake pads, repairing suspension andpneumatic systems on rolling stock equipment and components in accordance with FRA and Amtrak standards andguidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs inspection, testing and maintenance in accordance with 49CFR regulations and Amtrak standards andguidelines
  • Troubleshoots equipment to determine corrective actions and causes of equipment failures
  • Repairs doors, windows, interior equipment, access panels, hand brakes, brake shoes, outside car body components,fi re extinguishers, emergency tools and fi rst aid kits
  • Uses a variety of test equipment to diagnose malfunctions, troubleshoot and repair components and circuits
  • Maintains proper care and use of materials, test equipment, machines and hand tools normally associated withassigned job
  • May perform welding and burning
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience in troubleshooting, repair, replacement and rebuilding of mechanic equipment and systems
  • Must successfully complete training and attain/retain certifi cations applicable to assigned job
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of electronic tools, equipment and the measurements necessary to meet establishedstandards
  • Some computer skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of technical school or apprenticeship program
  • Experience in the maintenance of railroad equipment
COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Sign on Bonus!

Amtrak is currently hiring for our Mechanical department and we are offering a sign on bonus for the following specialized workforce:

Relocation - $15,000

A one-time $15,000 Lump Sum payment, which will be increased to account for taxes, which is provided to help pay for expenses associated with relocation for those with two or more years of relevant experience working for a Class I railroad. In addition our vendor partner, Relo Direct, will have a personal client service manager to help provide instructions for how to navigate the process, sign up for online portal, or select and meet with suppliers who can assist the new employee with additional needs like temporary housing, household goods move, and similar services.

Of note: the move must be at least 50 miles farther than from the old home to the old principal place of work, relocation must be generally completed within one year following the effective date of transfer/start of work in the new location, and voluntarily termination (cause for reasons other than job elimination, reduction in force, or restructuring) within 24 months will require repayment of the relocation amount (12 months or less - 100% repayment, 13-24 months - 50% repayment).

Sign-On - $3,000 to $5,000 (based on experience)

A possible sign-on bonus up to $5,000 (for example $5,000 for two or more years of railroad experience and $3,000 if you have graduated from a trade school). Sign-on bonuses will be paid out in the next pay cycle following the first 30 days of employment and should be paid out in one installment.

If an applicant/employee refuses to provide written consent for Amtrak to obtain these records, the individual will not be permitted to perform safety-sensitive functions.
