Position Focus:
Reporting to the Manager of Security at the Yale University Art Gallery, the Security Officer I is an essential employee who enforces policies and procedures with respect to the operation, security, and safety of the Gallery, its possessions, and its occupants in accordance with industry standards. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: opening, securing, and closing the Gallery and rooms or areas of special affairs according to department schedule and procedures; rotation in and out of several highly visible and interactive posts as assigned; operation and control the Staff Entrance which includes monitoring access, deliveries of both art and supplies, issuance of visitor passes, keys, and security devices, and other related administrative duties; response to fire alarms, determining alarm locations via the fire alarm panels; communicating policies, information, and directions to patrons in a clear and polite yet authoritative manner, reporting all violations; inspection and protection of designated areas and objects as directed by Gallery staff, reporting problems promptly; responding to all alarms and emergencies in accordance with the Art Gallery procedures and reporting all safety/fire hazards, security problems, system/equipment malfunctions, and observed maintenance problems to supervisors, control center, telecommunications center, campus police, and alarm monitoring centers as necessary.

Essential Duties: Open, secure, and close the Art Gallery as well as rooms and areas of special affairs according to department schedule and procedures. Control access to areas by setting up stanchions. Rotate in and out of several highly visible and interactive posts as assigned. Posts include: Old Art Gallery way-finding posts; the Nolen Center post; the Art Gallery Main Entrance, Staff Entrance post; and off-campus posts such as the West Campus and LSF Security Offices. Operate and control the Staff Entrance monitoring access, deliveries of both art and supplies, issuance of visitor passes, keys and security devices. Oversee the loading dock activities. Respond to fire alarms and determine alarm locations via the fire alarm panels. Screen telephone calls and direct them to proper staff. Perform basic functions related to the job such as filing and distributing internal mail. Communicate policies, information and directions to patrons in a clear and polite yet authoritative manner and report all violations. Inspect and protect designated areas and objects as directed by Gallery staff and reporting problems promptly. Check temperature and humidity gauges and other mechanical/electronic devices in specified areas. Notify designated personnel in event of emergency or reportable fluctuations. Count and record the number of visitors in specified areas. Check identification and determine authorized entry or use of the space. Maintain records as needed such as a sign in log and floor inspection reports. Report all safety hazards, fire hazards, security problems, system/equipment malfunctions, and observed maintenance problems to supervisors, control center, telecommunications center, campus police, and alarm monitoring centers as necessary. Respond to all alarms and emergencies in accordance with the Art Gallery procedures. Perform related duties as required or assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Enforces procedural rules and regulations. Ensures the personal safety of staff, visitors, and property. Maintains security and safety for assigned area. Maintains working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes and admitting requirements. 2. May operate and monitor security control panels alarms, and related security equipment to provide area and visitor surveillance. Patrols assigned area including garages and other parking areas. Checks for suspicious occurrences, and enforces parking rules and regulations. 3. Responds to and investigates situations reported to Control Rooms. Calls Campus Police or other authorities to investigate suspicious activities or security violations that require intervention. 4. Checks vehicles in University and private parking lots for authorized parking sticker. Issues parking violation warnings, and tags and requests towing when necessary. 5. Checks ID cards of persons entering the facility. Refuses to admit persons who cannot show either proper authorization or cause for being admitted. Provides information and directions. 6. Explains rules and regulations. Opens and closes facility, ensuring that users have left the premises. Reports security and general maintenance problems to the proper authorities. 7. Collects and transports money, and handles small amounts of cash transactions when necessary. May be responsible for Lost-And-Found. Maintains logs and records of occurrences, completes necessary paperwork, and may use computer terminal to input and retrieve data.

Required Education and Experience

High school level education or equivalent and two years of experience in security, law enforcement, military police, or customer service; or an Associates degree and two years of experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:
Ability to maintain professional composure when dealing with unusual circumstances.

Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time and respond quickly in an emergency situation.

Required Skill/Ability 3:
Ability to hear and respond to auditory stimuli in crowded busy environment with or without earpiece.

Required Skill/Ability 4:
Ability to lift 30 lbs. to shoulder height (fire extinguisher) and 40 lbs. to waist (stanchions).
Ability to climb stairs up to six flights during emergencies.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience with electronic security systems; computer experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications

State of Connecticut License for Security Officer (Guard Card)

Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
Current State of CT Security Officer ID or apply for and receive card and associated registration. Failure to obtain ID within initial 90 days of employment and provide proof of continued renewal will result in termination of employment.
