Position Summary
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is the executive responsible for the operations of all Maine Behavioral Healthcare (MBH) facilities and programs. The COO is in charge of guiding a company’s workflow strategy and organization of all essential business processes
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
1. Education: Master’s degree in health or hospital administration, business administration. Master’s degree in Clinical Discipline (e.g. Counseling, Social Work, Nursing) preferred.
2. License/Certifications: Clinical licensure preferred.
3. Experience: Progressive management experience of 8-10 years of management and healthcare operations.
4. Experience within a multi-site, matrixed, integrated system is preferred.
5. Demonstrated success in providing leadership in the management of health system operations.
6. Demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive and effective relations at all levels of the organization.
7. Strong interpersonal skills; able to communicate and relate well with staff at all levels of the organization.
8. Strong healthcare financial management skills and expertise with a track record of improving the operating margin within
a competitive market and challenging reimbursement environment.
9. Thorough knowledge of relevant Conditions of Participation and accreditation standards.
10. Able to assimilate and analyze data and to make relevant and realistic recommendations pertaining to the provision of
nursing care, treatment, and services.
Essential Functions
- A detail-oriented, results-focused leader with a project management mindset; the ability to see the big picture and think
- Works with the management team, medical staff, nursing leadership and others to maintain an environment committed to
- Ensures operational efficiencies through benchmarking and quantitative monitoring of operational performance.
- Develops and implements action plans to ensure efficient operations.
- Participates in the functions and activities of both the MBH Leadership Teams including, but not limited to service on
- Supports the development of new services and programs as needed to sustain a competitive position in the market.
- Works in cooperation with the Chief Financial Officer and other leaders in the development and presentation of annual capital and operating budgets.
- Manages and monitors financial performance to ensure compliance with established budgets.
- Ensures consistent progress is made across the health system in planning, promoting, and achieving organization-wide
- Coordinates with CMO, entity leadership and Quality Department staff to ensure compliance with regulatory and healthcare standards (i.e JCAHO.)
- Leads, manages, mentors and evaluates direct reports, holding them responsible and accountable for the performance of their departments.
- Reviews the management structure within areas of responsibility and establishes a culture of accountability and effective collaboration
- Collaborates with other local health system COOs.
- Actively embraces a culture of engagement and models best practice management behaviors that create an environment where employees are respected, recognized and motivated to perform their best work.
- Responsible for engaging leadership and staff in role-based operational excellence activities to improve quality and outcomes, including meeting role-based frequency standards for participation in daily huddle, Gemba walks and team meeting facilitation of improvement activities.
