Job Summary
The Interpreter Apprentice functions in both a learning role, observing LMC mentor interpreters and in the role of interpreter under their direct supervision. Apprentices receive advanced training through a year-long apprenticeship that includes, intense job shadowing, monthly terminology exams, structured classroom time to focus on advanced training in note-taking, listening skills, analytical skills and short-term memory development, formal learning sessions delivered by LMC nurse mentors and LMC Interpreter Services department trainings, and rotations focused on specialties offered through LMC's Physician Network and support roles. The combination of in-person experience and classroom time is designed to increase confidence, experience and interpreting skills. Under the supervision of the program head and mentors, the apprentice will prepare for assignments, observe and perform consecutive and/or simultaneous interpreting for patient encounters at LMC facilities and interpret following standard protocols set forth by the NCIHC, document encounters in EPIC and complete post-session self-evaluation and debriefing, additional focused practice in the classroom setting and case discussion.

Essential Functions
Shadows mentor interpreters to receive on the job training, practice interpreting skills, implement interpreter protocols, ethics and standards of practice.
Documents all encounters, for both in-patient and out-patient settings in EPIC.
Has contact in-person, through video and by phone with patients and employees/providers in other departments; tact is required in these situations and the apprentice assumes the responsibility for harmonious relationships.
The apprentice will be committed to attend and complete scheduled classes and trainings to include a 40-hour introductory training, quarterly department trainings and weekly meetings.
Under direct supervision of mentor interpreters the apprentice will interpret for LMC patients and providers to practice interpreting skills and the implementation of professional standards of practice and code of ethics.
Duties & Responsibilities
Log encounters to keep track of the number of encounters in each specialty rotation.
Monitors language and interpreting skills, takes initiative to maintain and improve as necessary and stays abreast of linguistic meanings and regional variances of both languages.
Culturally sensitive and able to adapt to adverse situations, handle high pressure or emotionally intense scenarios.
Able to travel to other LMC facilities.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
