Operator Maintainer Trainee - (11952)

Under general supervision, completes on-the-job training in skilled craft work associated with the operation, maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting of process equipment and components of water treatment plants, wastewater/reuse treatment plants, pumping stations and bio-solids processing. Work is performed following clear and detailed instructions covered by established methods, techniques and procedures which are somewhat diversified, but involve similar situations. Contacts with others are primarily for the purpose of receiving or exchanging information. Work requires limited knowledge of operational and mechanical procedures, rules, regulations and equipment. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, where there are some risks and hazards. Incumbent may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts. The work is reviewed during progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness in following instructions.

Provides mechanical and operational support to plant personnel and/or managers.
Completes on-the-job training in the methods, practices, procedures and techniques in operating, maintaining, installing, repairing and troubleshooting mechanical equipment.
Assists in operating, maintaining, installing, repairing, and troubleshooting process equipment, such as but not limited to gas and diesel engines, heat exchangers, fans, valves, compressors, storage tanks, pumps of various types, overhead cranes and hoists.
Inspects equipment to verify proper operation, identify problems and take corrective action where needed.
Operates and maintains equipment such as grinders, lathes, drill presses, pipe threading and welding machines, band saws, electrical testing equipment and other associated shop equipment.
Maintains equipment maintenance records and reports.
Assists in performing metal fabrication such as ironwork, sheet metal, burning and welding.
Performs preventive maintenance on process equipment and water treatment plant components.
Maintains and inventories tools.
Operates and maintains vehicle in accordance with company procedures and policies.
Utilizes computer programs related to the maintenance, operation and communications functions.
Operates heavy equipment such as: ¾ ton trucks, boom trucks, tractors, forklifts, scissor lifts and aerial baskets and other vehicles that may require up to a Class "A" CDL License.
Performs minor electrical maintenance functions.
Cleans and maintains process equipment.
Performs other work-related tasks as required.
May work independently as knowledge, skills and abilities dictate.


Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

The following is required at the time of application for the position and must be maintained during employment in this classification:

Valid driver’s license

A valid Florida Class "A" commercial driver’s license may be required depending upon assignment and, if required, must be maintained during employment in this classification.

A valid American Welding Society Structural Welding Certificate may be required depending upon assignment and, if required, must be maintained during employment in this classification.

The following is required within 12 months:
Successful completion of required training course for State of Florida Class C Water or Wastewater Operator License, as approved by the Florida DEP

The following is required within 24 months and must be maintained during employment in this classification:

Obtain a passing score on the written exam for State of Florida Class C Water or Wastewater Operator License.

Must obtain State of Florida Class C Water or Wastewater licensure pursuant to training program and area of assignment.

This is a multi-year trainee position. The training program consists of four (4) six-month phases. Trainees will advance one step every six months, provided that they successfully complete requirements of the applicable phase of the program. Failure to complete applicable phase/module of the program may result in separation of employment and termination from the training program.
