SUMMARY

Work involves constructing, maintaining, and repairing water mains and service lines; installs and removes water meters; may instruct utility service helper in methods and procedures. Work includes contact with customers. Employees in this classification receive continuing or individual assignments by the supervisor generally indicating work to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. The supervisor gives additional specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments.. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments and works independently on service calls. Work assignments are received through work orders (service calls). Work is review through service call reports and site observation by supervisor. The supervisor assures that the work is technically accurate and in compliance with instructions, established procedures, and guidelines.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Monitors the operation of water system and performs routine water quality tests.
Performs water utility preparatory and clean up work, and assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water transmission/distribution systems (e.g., well water and pumps).
Performs work related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of water transmission/distribution systems (e.g., well water and pumps) and associated structures and devices (e.g., mains, service lines, meters, valves, and/or fire hydrants); includes line location.
Operates equipment (e.g., tapping machine, listening device, backhoe, bobcat, and trencher) used in work on water transmission/distribution systems and in the inspection of grease control devices and wastewater sampling to include hand tools, such as hand or line location tools.
Ensures tools and equipment are available (e.g., trucks/warehouses are stocked with the necessary materials, tools, and equipment), assembled, and in proper working order.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Driver's License. (obtaining a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 6 months).
Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) Grade II certification.
Experience operating a back hoe or track hoe.
Experience working in an industrial or municipal water system to include the use of sampling and detection equipment (e.g., pipe horn, leak detection device).

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
Knowledge of the operation of water utilities distribution systems.
Knowledge of engineering involved in the development of water distribution systems, recycling methods, sewage treatment plants, and other pollution prevention and control systems in the water, air, and land.
Knowledge of basic techniques of water quality sampling and analysis for effective water pollution control.

WORK CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as roadways and construction sites.
Work may involve using various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, and power tools such as saws, pumps, drills and Heavy Equipment such as back hoes, excavators, etc.
May be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic or near animal or wildlife such as snakes, rodents, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or walking.
May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 75 lbs. Work involves physical ability necessary to visually inspecting fine details in order to identify similarities and differences in colors, shapes, textures or physical appearance associated with job-related objects or materials.
