Supplemental Questions:
As the Recreation Ranger, you will be responsible for a wide variety of contacts with the recreating public. In one page or less, describe two situations you experienced having difficult interactions with the public or customers with one ending well and the other that didn’t? Explain what happened in each of those instances that lead to the good and poor interaction outcomes. What might you have done to improve the poor outcome interaction?

Special Information:
The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in park and or recreation management, archeology, geology, or related fields. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This park ranger will spend considerable time at Lake Elmo State Park with responsibility for other selected FWP sites that will include fishing access sites and wildlife management areas. This is a 0.50 FTE permanent position. It is based at the FWP Region 5 headquarters adjacent to Lake Elmo State Park. Lake Elmo State Park is 123 acres in size, the lake covers approximately half of the area. The park has a designated trail, playground, two pavilions, and projects to improve trails, fish habitat, and access projects are anticipated to be completed by early June. The park receives over 170,000 visitors per year, offers great recreational opportunities including hiking, swimming, boating, bird watching, and fishing. Fishing Access Sites and Wildlife Management areas offer opportunity for boating, fishing, hunting, birdwatching, hiking, as well as many other recreational activities.

This position requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, to work in environmental extremes for long periods of time, to assist the public independently, including at night, and a willingness to frequently travel between sites in the responsibility area within the region. Occasional travel outside of the region may occur. This position requires a willingness to work odd hours, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

Applicants should have a background in natural resources, recreation, and cultural resources with knowledge of recreation management, familiarity with natural and cultural resource management principles, including historical and current issues. They must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in a concise and interpretable manner, with department employees, the public, special interest groups and appropriate land management agencies. The ranger will need to have proficiency in the safe handling and operation of site-specific modes of transportation, such as pickup trucks, cars, non-motorized and motorized watercraft, bicycles, side by side vehicles, and ATV’s. They will need to be knowledge or willing to learn the laws, policies, and regulations under which the agency operates and site rules. Rangers are expected to negotiate, explain, and diffuse conflict among parties with differing views and visitors frustrated with department/site rules and policy. They must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors.

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Job Duties:
The Recreation Ranger position is a lead staffer within a geographic unit of State Parks, Fishing Access Sites, Wildlife Management Areas, and river corridors who assists the unit’s Recreation Manager with non-maintenance operations at the sites for the purpose of providing administrative, operational, recreation, visitor use, natural, cultural, and historical resource management. This position provides essential services and addresses tasks as they arise, such as visitor contacts, rule compliance, fee collection and remittance, interpretation and education, and other duties as assigned.

The Ranger is supervised by the Recreation Manager and provides direction for other staff and volunteers. In the absence of the Recreation Manager, the incumbent may be assigned acting Recreation Manager responsibilities. A Ranger may be assigned to multiple geographic units or be called upon to assist with, collaborate on, or share operational functions of another of another geographic unit as circumstances require.

Ability to assist public independently, in extremely harsh terrain, and at night.
Occasional travel.
Working odd hours, weekends and holidays is required.

Qualifications:

Ability to work effectively in extreme environmental conditions.
Willingness to work in various locations, conditions, and variable days/hours.
Must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors.
