Job Summary

Responsible for the ongoing development, implementation and coordination of sterilization and high level disinfection policies and practices. Duties include planning, organizing, and coordinating with leaders across perioperative services, as well as the LMC network to ensure all regulatory compliance is met. Responsible for staff education, competencies, orientation, training, and process improvement to ensure the delivery of both safe and efficient patient care. Supports the mission and values of Lexington Medical Center. This role encompasses that of an educator, facilitator, project manager, and researcher.The Sterile Processing Educator will report to the System Sterilization Program Coordiantor.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology, Healthcare, Science, or a Related Field
Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of Experience in Sterilization Practices, Aseptic Technique, Infection Control, and Regulatory Compliance for Perioperative Services
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Current Certification in specialty of focus from International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD);

Certified Flexible Scope Re-processor or Endoscope Re-processor (IAHCSMM or CBSPD) must both be obtained and maintained within 18 months of entry into role.
Required Training: Experience with Surgical Tracking System software platforms;

Demonstrated computer literacy skills including working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook systems from Microsoft;

Must possess strong knowledge in the care and handling of bloodborne pathogens, universal precautions, and safety hazards in regards to bloodborne pathogens safety.

Essential Functions
Provides subject matter expertize (SME) in all sterilization and high-level disinfection reprocessing activities. Collaborates with all areas performing sterilization and high-level disinfection across the LMC network to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance.
Performs compliance reviews to identify regulatory risks/deficiencies, non-compliance with internal policies and procedures, and opportunities to enhance internal efforts and promote industry best practices.
Works with multidisciplinary teams to identify, manage, and mitigate organizational risk. Ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and organization policies.
In collaboration with HR representatives and the SPD Manager, provides oversight for the Sterile Processing Apprenticeship Program by serving as lead instructor.
Responsible for the development of educational programs to include, but not limited to, central sterile processing, sterilization practices, process improvements, staff competencies, and high level disinfection practices.
Develops and implements standardized role based education, training, and competency development to address knowledge gaps and support new initiatives resulting in competent staff and consistent processes.
Facilitates continuing education for staff certification and recertification.
Responsible for DNV preparedness activities for the departments, as well as all other process improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance (DHEC, DNV, CMS, OSHA, FDA).
Oversees quality and infection control initiatives for sterile processing in accordance to infection control policies.
Duties & Responsibilities
Develops, reviews, and/or revises departmental policies and procedures as needed.
Recommends process improvement efforts for the organization surrounding sterilization and high level disinfection.
Collaborates with the Quality Outcomes group on DNV Surveys and provides updates as needed.
Maintains knowledge and competency with relevant regulatory standards; evaluates programs and affects changes as needed to ensure compliance updated regulatory standards.
Select, coordinate, and supervise assigned staff education provided by any outside organizations or entities.
Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and current literature with professional affiliations.
Demonstrates leadership skills and the ability to motivate and coach, functions as a professional role model for other staff, and exhibits commitment and pride through personal example.
Ability to balance multiple priorities within a high-stress/rapidly changing environment.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
